Young consumers in the United Arab Emirates are increasingly favoring lighter, contemporary gold jewellery instead of the traditional heavy designs that have long dominated the market, according to a recent report on shifting buying habits across the region.

Shifting Preferences Among Young Consumers

Rather than abandoning gold altogether, millennials and Gen Z shoppers are looking for pieces that fit seamlessly into everyday wardrobes while still preserving intrinsic value. Gold’s cultural significance in weddings, family heirlooms and celebratory events remains strong, yet the younger cohort is redefining what styles are considered desirable. They want items that can move from a casual brunch to a formal dinner without appearing out of place.

Amreen Iqbal, founder of Dubai-based Piece of You, notes that consumers want jewellery that can be worn regularly and styled flexibly. She observes that lighter weights and modern designs allow participation in tradition without sacrificing personal expression or financial prudence.

Shamlal Ahamed, managing director at Malabar Gold & Diamonds, highlights the appeal of minimalist pieces for transitioning between work, casual and formal settings. John Paul Alukkas of Joyalukkas Jewellery confirms that younger clients prioritize versatile pieces suitable for multiple occasions, noting that simple lines and the ability to layer are especially popular. Chirag Vora of Bafleh Jewellery adds that first-time buyers exercise caution when gold prices are high.

Affordability Influences Buying Choices

Raised gold prices are prompting shoppers to reconsider both weight and overall cost. Smaller, lighter pieces provide an accessible entry point for new buyers who might otherwise be deterred by the expense of heavier items. Interest in 18-karat gold, known for durability and design flexibility, is growing among younger demographics seeking options they can wear frequently.

Traditional heavy gold still retains importance for weddings, engagements and other cultural events where lavishness is expected. The shift lies in how the younger generation defines desirable jewellery: practical, adaptable designs that blend into daily life while preserving gold’s intrinsic value and emotional resonance.
